Random thoughts on the best Valkyrie ever
Jun. 12th, 2017 06:31 pmFirst off....
This take is a pure OC, and doesn't follow MCU canon, nor mythological canon precisely. There are many caveats and things that may or may not add to the mythos that we attempted to create at the time. So bear that in mind when consuming this info.
The Valkyries (wait, call them Valkal)
The Valkal filled the role of the Judeo-Christian based angels at the time. The name was altered to allow for male Valks. Yes that is correct, there are male Valerkyries as well as female Worth Host in this setting.
Initially they were entities created by Odin's mother, but as the war between the Heavens wore on, there was a need to replenish the ranks that procreation could not match. (Yes Valks can procreate in this setting). The requirement to be a 'true believer' was dropped from the need to be recruited into either rank, as the deed around the circumstance of death (and life) were deemed enough. Especially as the Norse dieties were hard pressed by the new religion and the fervor that their adherents displayed. In essence there was a coalescence around the Nordic deities by the others of the time, and of European flavor to oppose the onset of this encroaching religion.
Valkals do have powers associated with their state of being, however they also carry over the ones they had when they were collected as well. This does allow for the opportunity for some to expand their knowledge of certain mysteries far beyond what a mortal would be capable of. Thus there are some within the ranks that are capable of many wondrous and terrible feats of magic, engineering, tactics, and yes even math.
What one does gain, without regard if they were created, born, or selected into the role of Valkal?
Immortality. Once one reaches their maturity, and this does differ across individuals, the cease to age. Disease is unknown amongst their ranks. This is not to say that they cannot be killed. While having 'heavenly' stamina, they are still susceptible to being wounded and killed by accident or intent. It is simply much harder to accomplish due to a far quicker healing response, and not to consider many of the ranks know healing magic.
Wings. Yes, much like their more renowned rivals of the Judeo-Christian ranks Valkal's do have wings. Their coloration vary, and somewhat rely on their status, rank, and flight membership for patterns. They have the ability to fly, carry substantial loads, and are taught tactical and strategic maneuvering in flight. All also have the ability to hide their wings, the exact mechanism is a cross between a glamour and simply hiding them in a pocket dimension, rendering them un remarkable in the ranks of mortals. Most also use this pocket dimension to hide weapons, dispatches, or other sensitive materials because it can only be accessed by the Valkal in question.
Magic. All Valkals have some for of magic available to them. The most common is the ability to move between the realms and within realms at will. This is often referred to as 'The Step Between' or 'The Step Between Realms'. This is not an overwhelming power but can be impressive to those not used to such things, so the display is entirely up to the Valkal and their mood. It can vary from simply 'vanishing' to a portal of some type that they step into. Most do have some capability for magical healing, but(more applying to those who are collected) those who have more skills in magic often bring their pre-Valkal experience with them.
Death Sense and the Judgement. By their nature, Valkals' are sensitive to death, or the approaching possibility of death. Often they are dispatched by Odin to oversea the passing of one that will be escorted into the Halls to become one of the Worthy Host, though sometimes they are called because of the circumstances surrounding an event. For an example the Spartan Three Hundred were not only accompanied by Thebians, the Valkals watched over their action as well. They did indeed collect souls that final day but only to escort them to the Fields of Elysium as the custom of the men who fell.
They also have the ability to render final judgement if one if truly worthy to join the host or the flight. This is perhaps any Valkal's most important duty to Odin, and is more impactful than one might think. There are more implications within this ability and thus allow the Valkal in question to sire protege in a fairly unique way.
